We are endlessly grateful to our volunteers for giving their time to better the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Our volunteers are truly the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association here in North Carolina.
In honor of National Volunteer Week 2024, we’ll be spotlighting a different volunteer from our Chapter each day. Today we are featuring…
BILL TAYLOR
PINEHURST, NC
What brought you to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association?
As with many families, my family has also been impacted by Alzheimer’s with both my mother and my wife’s mother. This was a difficult time for myself and my family. When the opportunity to get involved with the Alzheimer’s Association presented itself, I saw it as an opportunity to honor my mothers, help fight this disease and help other families through this terrible disease.
What volunteer role(s) do you have with the Association?
When I first got involved with the Alzheimer’s Association, my company was a major sponsor for Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Moore County. Myself, my family and my employees participated in the walk and were able to witness what an incredible organization this was. After the walk I was invited by the walk manager, Victoria Huggins, to be part of the Moore County Executive Leadership Team (ELT). I am now in my second year as part of the ELT and my company is in its third year of sponsorship and look forward to many more years of involvement. I am so proud to be part of this team and this great effort to defeat Alzheimer’s.
Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee members play a key role in the success of each event, from getting local companies involved to helping participants engage with our mission to planning the event experience.
What do you enjoy most about your volunteer role?
First it is an honor to work with such a highly motivated and dedicated leadership team. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people all working together to achieve a goal is incredible. And I would be remiss if I didn’t specifically mention Victoria Huggins. She is one of the most optimistic, driven and capable people I have worked with and she pushes me to be better. I also enjoy the community that is involved in this effort. Their optimism, drive and dedication to this cause is infectious. Finally, I am honored to be part of a group fighting against this disease and supporting the individuals and families that are impacted by this disease.
What piece of your role do you feel makes the biggest impact?
The most important part of my role on the ELT is to provide whatever advice and assistance our walk leader needs to be successful! Particularly, I enjoy reaching out to the business community and local government leaders to get them involved in this great effort and event.
If someone were considering volunteering with the Association, what would you say to them?
Jump at the opportunity to be part of such an incredible community and cause. Volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association is such a great experience, working with motivated and amazing people, being part of community with a goal of defeating this terrible disease, and the friendships you make along the way.
THANK YOU, BILL
