We are endlessly grateful to our volunteers for giving their time to better the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Our volunteers are truly the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association here in North Carolina.
In honor of National Volunteer Week 2024, we’ll be spotlighting a different volunteer from our Chapter each day. Today we are featuring…
DAPHNE BRITT
APEX, NC
What brought you to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association?
I became a volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association after my father-in-law passed away from the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.
I had heard of Alzheimer’s and only knew it to be a disease that caused memory loss. As my father-in-law’s disease progressed, seeing the devastating effects it was taking on him both mentally and physically broke my heart and changed my life forever. I knew that I had to do something to honor Mr. Britt. As I learned more about the disease, I knew that I needed to find a way to try to keep it from impacting more of my loved ones. I became aware of the Alzheimer’s Association and started participating in the Walk To End Alzheimer’s.
What volunteer role(s) do you have with the Association?
I am an advocate with the Association. [Recently represented our state as a North Carolina delegate for our Advocacy Forum in Washington D.C.] I also currently the Team Captain for Cisco Systems for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Triangle.
Advocates are help make Alzheimer’s a state and national priority by writing, calling, emailing or visiting government officials.
What do you enjoy most about your volunteer role?
What I enjoy most about being an advocate is being a caring listener to those that have loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and sharing with them that the Alzheimer’s Association has so many resources available no matter the current issues they are facing. I also love going to Capitol Hill to help to make our elected officials aware of how much good they can do by supporting Alzheimer’s initiatives.
What I love most about participating in the Walk2EndAlz is that with every dollar we raise I see hope for a future without Alzheimer’s.
If someone were considering volunteering with the Association, what would you say to them?
It will be one of the best decisions you will ever make and you are needed! Give me a call and let’s chat about it!
THANK YOU, DAPHNE
