We are endlessly grateful to our volunteers for giving their time to better the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Our volunteers are truly the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association here in North Carolina.
In honor of National Volunteer Week 2024, we’ll be spotlighting a different volunteer from our Chapter each day. Today we are featuring…
REID HARRIS
WILMINGTON, NC
What brought you to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association?
My mother was a hospice caregiver and was involved with hospice marketing for over three decades. I had attended the Walk on and off throughout the years, and when I joined my firm, Edward Jones, which is the Walk to End Alzheimer’s national presenting sponsor and a national team, it’s like everything came full circle.
My goal was to assist our region in getting more involvement and donations to the local chapter. We have been growing steadily and are excited for the next Walk as we think this will be the best year yet!
What volunteer role(s) do you have with the Association?
I have had the honor of serving on the [Wilmington Walk] Executive Leadership Team for the last three years. In 2023, I was the Walk event chair, which was overall an amazing and profound experience. This year, I am stepping down as the chair, but will still be involved on the leadership team!
Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee members play a key role in the success of each event, from getting local companies involved to helping participants engage with our mission to planning the event experience.
What do you enjoy most about your volunteer role?
I enjoy brainstorming and coming up with great ideas with other volunteers to market our race for participants, and to increase our donation amounts. This is both with the general public and with Edward Jones and its associates.
What piece of your role do you feel makes the biggest impact?
At the end of the day, the more walkers we have, and more donations we receive, the better we can help fund breakthroughs that lead to treatments of Alzheimer’s. This is, to me, the most impactful result of my involvement!
If someone were considering volunteering with the Association, what would you say to them?
We have done a good job getting other associates involved with the walk. A lot of times, it is people that have personally been affected by someone who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. They have the opportunity to join one single cause, where everyone is looking to unite in order to find a cure for a terrible disease while also joining a community that truly cares for each other!
THANK YOU, REID
