SCOTT SMITH – National Volunteer Week 2024 Spotlight

We are endlessly grateful to our volunteers for giving their time to better the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Our volunteers are truly the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association here in North Carolina.

In honor of National Volunteer Week 2024, we’ll be spotlighting a different volunteer from our Chapter each day. Today we are featuring…

SCOTT SMITH
RALEIGH, NC

What brought you to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association?

My grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s, and my mother is currently living with Alzheimer’s. A friend reached out about getting involved in the Alzheimer’s Association and helped to connect me to become a volunteer.

What volunteer role(s) do you have with the Association?

I am honored to have been selected as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Triangle Walk Executive Leadership Team Chair for 2024.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee members play a key role in the success of each event, from getting local companies involved to helping participants engage with our mission to planning the event experience.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer role?

It is great to be part of a team of community leaders that share their networks to raise financial support for the disease while also raising awareness for the many support roles that the Alzheimer’s Association offers to the community. The Alzheimer’s Association offers many programs to help support families impacted by Alzheimer’s.

What piece of your role do you feel makes the biggest impact?

The biggest impact is creating a sense of community around the disease. Obviously raising awareness and financial support to further the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association is a critical piece of the Executive Leadership Team, but hearing others stories and sharing ideas to reach our goals is incredibly meaningful.

If someone were considering volunteering with the Association, what would you say to them?

It is a great organization with a wide range of community members that share a mission to improve the lives of families and individuals impacted by the disease. We had great success meeting our goals in 2023 and welcome all help to beat our 2024 goals and advance the mission. The ultimate goal will be to create a world without Alzheimer’s and it will take an army of passionate volunteers to help make this a reality.

THANK YOU, SCOTT
