Alzheimer’s Association free support group is open to all local caregivers impacted by dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Carolina Chapter has formed a local Currituck County Caregiver Support Group for family, friends and caregivers who care for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The meeting will be held as follows:
Third Thursday of each month (starting September 19, 2024)
10:30 – 11:30 a.m

Alzheimer’s Association support groups, conducted by trained facilitators, are a safe place for caregivers. They allow participants to develop a support system and exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions. The groups also allow opportunity to talk through issues and discuss ways of coping and share feelings of needs and concerns. Group members also learn about community resources that can help them in their caregiving role.
Educational Kickoff Program – September 12, 2024
The caregivers support group’s first meeting will take place the following Thursday, September 19, but a special educational kickoff program, “Responding to Dementia Related Behaviors,” will take place on Thursday, September 12 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the same location, the Currituck Senior Center. “The demands of being an Alzheimer’s caregiver are all-encompassing and increase over time as the disease progresses,” said Christine John-Fuller, executive director, Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Carolina Chapter. “No one should face Alzheimer’s alone. We are grateful to the Currituck Senior Center for helping bring this important aspect of caregiver support to the Currituck County community.”
It is estimated that in Currituck County, there is a 9% Alzheimer’s disease prevalence rate in their age 65 and older population. This equates to an estimated 500 individuals in the county.
