North Carolina Legislative Update – September 2024

Entering the Fall season means there are many opportunities for advocates to share their stories with legislators and advance important Alzheimer’s legislation. Read below for updates on Public Policy in North Carolina and ways to get involved.

State Advocacy

While the NC General Assembly adjourned at the end of June, the Alzheimer’s Association is cultivating a robust policy agenda for 2025. To be the first to hear exciting updates and learn about ways to engage, text NCADVOCATE to 52886.

One of our key priorities was introduced at the 2024 NC State Advocacy Day. We will continue championing increased respite care funding through Project C.A.R.E., North Carolina’s only dementia-specific respite program. As the number of caregivers grows in North Carolina, Project C.A.R.E. needs additional funds to support the Alzheimer’s community. You can make a difference by sharing your support for respite care funding with your legislators. Click here to urge your legislators to increase respite care funding in 2025.

NAPA Reauthorization Act & Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act

The bipartisan NAPA Reauthorization Act and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act would build on the progress made over the last decade by continuing to promote rapid research and improve the delivery of clinical care and services for people living with Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

After passing the Senate unanimously last month, advocates have been focused on bringing the bipartisan NAPA Reauthorization Act (S. 133 / H.R. 619) and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act (S. 134 / H.R. 620) to a House vote. Tell your representative to keep Alzheimer’s and dementia a national priority by passing these important bills.

BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act

The bipartisan BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Reauthorization Act (S. 3775 / H.R. 7218) will continue strengthening the Alzheimer’s and other dementia public health infrastructure in communities across the nation. This critical legislation will empower public health departments to implement effective dementia intervention, such as efforts to increase early detection and diagnosis, risk reduction, and caregiver support.

People living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias as well as their caregivers depend on the support the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act provides. We can’t let this bipartisan law expire at the end of the year and risk losing the services that local health departments provide. Tell your representatives to support BOLD reauthorization.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated volunteers for their advocacy work on these bipartisan priorities. Your support is crucial in improving the lives of those affected by Alzheimer’s nationwide.

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most critical public health issues in America. This is why we are unrelentingly advocating for public policies that increase critical research funding and support all those affected. Now is the time to join us.
