Holiday cheer and gratitude from your North Carolina staff

On behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association in North Carolina — including our dedicated volunteers, staff, and the entire Alzheimer’s community in our wonderful state — we send you our heartfelt holiday greetings. Your unwavering support has been invaluable as we strive to lead the fight against Alzheimer’s and all other dementias. Together, we are accelerating global research, promoting risk reduction and early detection, and enhancing quality care and support.

Your incredible support has made a profound difference for those we serve. Thanks to you, we achieved the largest single-year investment in dementia research in the history of the Alzheimer’s Association. Your dedication also empowered us to extend our reach, enhancing our care and support services, volunteer efforts, and fundraising initiatives.

Here are some highlights showcasing the many ways you helped us advance our mission in 2024:

  • Research: Our cumulative impact on research now includes more than $430 million invested in over 1,110 active research projects in 56 countries. This includes research currently being conducted at North Carolina institutions such as Duke University Medical Center, The University of North Carolina, and Wake Forest University Health Sciences.
  • Information & Referral: More than 1,700 North Carolinians utilized our 24/7 Helpline service at least once for information, referrals or care consultations.
  • Education, Training & Support Groups: More than 16,000 individuals across the state participated in virtual, on-demand, and in-person education programs and support groups.
  • Advocacy: We helped pass three major pieces of legislation to support those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers: the NAPA Reauthorization Act, Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act, and the BOLD Reauthorization Act while also securing a $100 million increase for Alzheimer’s disease research, bringing federal funding at the National Institutes of Health to $3.8 billion.
  • Volunteers: Over 1,100 volunteer leaders fueled our mission, with hundreds more assisting as event day volunteers.
  • Funding the Mission: More than 11,000 participants across North Carolina joined in Walk to End Alzheimer’s, The Longest Day, and our Memory Gala, collectively raising $4 million for the fight against Alzheimer’s — a record-breaking year!

P.S. While the holidays often bring opportunities for togetherness, sharing, laughter, and cherished memories, they can also bring stress, disappointment, and sadness. Individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia may feel a heightened sense of loss during this time due to the changes they have experienced. Caregivers, too, may find it overwhelming to maintain traditions while providing care. With this in mind, we offer tips and information to help navigate the holidays with Alzheimer’s. And as always, our dementia care experts are available to support you 24/7 at 800.272.3900.

Happy Holidays from all our Eastern North Carolina & Western Carolina Chapter Staff
