CHRISTINA ATTI-UPTEGROW- National Volunteer Week 2025 Spotlight

We are endlessly grateful to our volunteers for giving their time to better the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Our volunteers are truly the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association here in North Carolina.

In honor of National Volunteer Week 2025, we’ll be spotlighting a different volunteer from our Eastern North Carolina Chapter each day. Today we are featuring …

What brought you to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association?

I work in senior living, so I have a professional connection to many individuals who struggle with cognitive decline and dementia. I also have a personal connection – my grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and I was there to support my aunt who was my grandmother’s primary caregiver. My grandma was an amazingly strong, supportive woman.

What volunteer role(s) do you have with the Association?

I serve on the executive leadership team for Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Wilmington, and I also volunteer as a community educator, presenting Alzheimer’s programs throughout the community.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer role?

The engagement piece.  Listening to others personal stories, the impact the Alzheimer’s Association has in the community.  All the doors the organization opens for people so that they are not alone on this journey.

What piece of your role do you feel makes the biggest impact?

Supporting people to be involved in Walk to End Alzheimer’s, running a support group and advocating for those who need support.

If someone were considering volunteering with the Association, what would you say to them?

This is an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself. If you want to serve people who need it, please do what you can to spread the word. Volunteer. There is a spot for everyone. We need everyone’s voice in order to stop the increasing numbers of people dying of Alzheimer’s or other dementia.

THANK YOU, CHRISTINA!
