Duke Health Offers Caregiver Community Event, Sept. 9 & 10

Are you a current caregiver or a professional looking to sharpen your skills? The Duke Caregiver Community Event, hosted by Duke Health, provides an in-depth opportunity to hear from experts, learn about local support services and connect with other caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Carolina Chapter is proud to once again support this event as a conference organizer.

This in-person event will feature education sessions throughout the day for general attendees, as well as a special track of educational sessions for professionals. In addition, all attendees will have access to an expansive exhibit hall featuring 100+ community organizations, plus numerous activities throughout the event.

To accommodate interest, the Duke Caregiver Community Event will offer an identical program on two dates. You can attend one or both conference days.

Date: Sept. 9 or Sept. 10 (same session options each day)

Time: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Cost: Registration for family caregivers is $20 (lunch and all event-day activities included). Registration for professionals is $75.

This event offers a robust agenda of concurrent sessions on a wide variety of topics. The Alzheimer’s Association will present on the following topic, joining a wealth of expertise among numerous speakers and sessions.

Navigating Dementia Health Care (2:30 – 3:30 pm both days)

Dementia care involves navigating a complex health care system that includes primary care providers, specialists, social services, and medication management—often presenting challenges for caregivers and families. Physicians and other medical professionals play a central role on the care team for individuals living with dementia. This session provides practical tools for navigating the health care system and communicating effectively with care team members, helping ensure coordinated, high-quality care for the person living with dementia.

The speakers for this session include Dr. Scott Robert, Alzheimer’s Association Board member, caregiver, internist, assistant professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine and Lori Balog, Alzheimer’s Association, Health Systems Director for NC, SC, and GA.

  • Pop-Up Mini-Sessions: Quick caregiver mini-sessions designed to give short bites of helpful information to assist you during your caregiving role.
  • “Creating a Safe Space” Demonstration Area: Experts showcase examples of potential hazards in an older adult’s living space and how to make changes for a safer environment.
  • DukeWELL-ness Clinic: 15-minute wellness visit to assess vital aspects of your health, including blood pressure, A1C levels, cholesterol, heart health, vision, and even provide flu vaccinations.
  • Adult Incontinence Product Bank: Community organizations have come together to create an adult incontinence product bank dedicated to assisting individuals with their incontinence needs. 
  • 100+ Community Resource Organizations: Walk the show floor and meet representatives from groups that offer services for assisted living, legal needs, maintaining an active lifestyle, and more.
